Leinster League Division 3
Kilkenny 24-10 Longford
Written by Mags Irish
Kilkenny’s women’s team made the long journey to Longford RFC on Sunday, determined to build on the momentum of their first league win against Tallaght. Despite facing significant challenges from the start — traveling with only 15 players — they displayed resilience and teamwork to secure a hard-fought victory.
Kilkenny burst into action immediately, with Isla Mosse crashing over the try line just three minutes into the game. Emily Kenny added the conversion, giving Kilkenny a quick 7-0 lead. The team dominated much of the first half, showing composure in their ball-handling and defensive organization. However, their aggressive play led to the first of three yellow cards, temporarily reducing them to 14 players. Despite the disadvantage, Kilkenny’s defense held firm, preventing Longford from scoring and showcasing their determination to keep control of the match.
Once back to full strength, Kilkenny continued to press, with Tina Wright scoring a second try, followed shortly by another from Lieke Hoban. Emily Kenny successfully added the extras to both, establishing a solid lead. Longford fought back with a determined try in the corner just before halftime, narrowing the gap to 19-5.
Longford entered the second half with renewed intensity, forcing Kilkenny onto the back foot. Discipline continued to be an issue for Kilkenny, with two more yellow cards awarded, and an injury further reduced them to 13 players for a tough 10-minute stretch. Despite the pressure, Kilkenny's defensive line remained resilient, managing to hold up a potential Longford try at the goal line. However, the hosts eventually broke through, reducing Kilkenny’s lead to 19-10.
With the game on the line, Kilkenny dug deep, and some excellent line breaks from Tina Wright, Isla Mosse, and Eve Cronin gave them momentum. Their efforts paid off when Karen Delaney broke through the Longford defense to score a bonus-point try in the closing minutes, sealing the game at 24-10.
This victory was a true test of Kilkenny’s grit and resilience, with each player contributing to the win. It was also a special weekend for Kilkenny RFC, as all the club’s women’s and girls' teams enjoyed victories, marking a significant milestone for women’s rugby in Kilkenny. The performances across all levels showcased the growing strength and spirit within the club, as well as the dedication of the players and coaching staff. With this win, Kilkenny’s women’s team will be looking to carry their momentum into future matches and strengthening their place in the league.
