The Kilkenny Women returned to the pitch this Sunday with a home game in Foulkstown against CYM. Following a series of tough matches, the Kilkenny players were eager to secure a victory, and their determination was evident from the outset. With a focused and cohesive team performance, they delivered an exciting and action-packed game for the spectators.
The match began with Kilkenny on the front foot, showcasing strong defensive pressure that set the tone for the day. A crucial blockdown by Megan Callanan disrupted CYM’s early momentum, allowing Isla Mosse and Eve Cronin to work together in a sharp attacking play that pushed the team deep into CYM’s half. From a scrum Kilkenny’s backs showed their class and composure, creating space for Leah McCarthy to become the first to put points on the board. Emily Kenny added the conversion, giving Kilkenny an early 7-0 lead after 24 minutes.
Megan Callanan’s tactical kicks into CYM’s 22 forced their opponents into a defensive positions and Kilkenny’s solid defence forced the turnovers. A crooked throw from CYM during a lineout handed Kilkenny a perfect chance to attack. Emily Kenny once again displayed her sharp awareness, breaking through CYM’s defensive line with a powerful run. She set up Eve Cronin, who executed a brilliant side-step to find the try line. Cronin’s effort brought Kilkenny to a 12-0 lead just before halftime.
The second half brought an immediate challenge for Kilkenny, with a yellow card that temporarily reduced their numbers to 14 players. Despite the setback, the team doubled down on their defensive efforts, holding CYM at bay, refusing to let the opposition gain any significant ground. Kilkenny’s persistence paid off once more when Eve Cronin broke through for her second try of the match. Emily Kenny’s consistent kicking form added the conversion, extending the lead to 19-0.
CYM fought back and managed to find a small opening in Kilkenny’s defense, scoring their first and only try of the game. The conversion brought the score to 19-7, but Kilkenny quickly regained control of the match. Captain Megan Callanan and vice-captain Lieke Hoban combined for a massive double tackle that left their CYM opponent stunned and stopped her in her tracks.
The closing stages of the game saw Kilkenny firmly in control. An impressive run by Tina Wright drew a high tackle from CYM, resulting in a penalty for Kilkenny. With the forwards leading the charge, the team executed a series of powerful pick-and-go moves. Jenny Kirwan, demonstrating strength and determination, drove over the line to secure Kilkenny’s bonus-point try. The score now stood at 24-7, and Kilkenny maintained their dominance until the final whistle.
This well-rounded performance from the Kilkenny Women not only earned them a comfortable 24-7 bonus point win but also showcased their teamwork, resilience, and hunger for success. It was a performance to be proud of and a testament to their hard work and preparation.
