Kilkenny 21-19 Cill Dara
By Orla Hennebry
Kilkenny advanced to the next round of the Provincial Towns Cup with a dramatic 24-19 win over a resilient Cill Dara side at Foulkstown yesterday. While Kilkenny looked comfortable for much of the match, an inspired late surge by the visitors nearly turned the game on its head in the final stages.
The match began with Cill Dara earning an early penalty opportunity, but they were unable to take the lead. Kilkenny responded with a show of strength that would define much of the contest. After 25 minutes of pressure, Kilkenny’s dominant maul forced the referee to award a penalty try when Cill Dara illegally collapsed the drive.
With momentum firmly on their side, Kilkenny extended their lead minutes later. A strong phase of play saw Jason Connolly crash over from close range, capitalizing on Kilkenny’s superior forward play. Jack Campion added the extras, bringing the score to 14-0.
Kilkenny’s lineout and maul were particularly impressive during the first half, creating a platform that left Cill Dara struggling to compete. The visitors, however, found some solace in their scrum, which provided a glimmer of hope.
The second half began with Kilkenny further asserting their control. Campion coolly converted a penalty to extend the lead to 17-0, seemingly putting the game beyond Cill Dara’s reach. Kilkenny’s dominance was evident, and the home side appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically midway through the half. A lapse in defensive concentration allowed Ryan Murphy, Cill Dara’s lively replacement scrum-half, to spot a gap and dart through the Kilkenny defense to score under the posts. The successful conversion brought the score to 17-7, injecting life into the visitors’ efforts.
Cill Dara’s fightback was temporarily stifled when their prop, Conor McCormack, received a yellow card, leaving them down a man. Kilkenny took full advantage, producing a scintillating attacking move. Joe Manuel ignited the play with a superb kick return, and the ball was spread quickly across the field, stretching the Cill Dara defense. Axel Montgomery finished the flowing move in the corner, and Campion’s conversion pushed the score to 24-7.
At that stage, many in the crowd assumed the game was over, but Cill Dara had other ideas. With nothing to lose, the visitors adopted an aggressive attacking approach that caught Kilkenny off guard. Damien Broughall, a former Ireland U20 player, led the charge with a powerful barrelling run deep into Kilkenny territory. From a penalty move, Cill Dara managed to score under the posts, narrowing the gap to 24-14 with eight minutes remaining.
The drama intensified as Cill Dara struck again, launching an attack from deep that culminated in another short-range try. The conversion brought the score to 24-19, setting up a nail-biting final few minutes.
Kilkenny had a chance to settle the game with a late penalty, but Campion’s kick rebounded off the post, keeping the tension alive. Cill Dara launched one last desperate attack, but Kilkenny’s defense held firm. A crucial turnover in the dying moments finally brought the game to a close, much to the relief of the home crowd.
Kilkenny’s dominance in the lineout and maul was the cornerstone of their success, particularly in the first half. Jason Connolly and Axel Montgomery delivered pivotal tries.
Kilkenny will celebrate the victory but also reflect on a performance that showcased both their potential and the need for sustained focus. The final 20 minutes revealed vulnerabilities in Kilkenny’s defense. Cill Dara’s ability to exploit gaps and play with urgency highlighted areas for improvement ahead of the next round.
