Leinster League Division 1B
Boyne 23-15 Kilkenny
By Orla Henebry
Kilkenny’s first outing after the Christmas break ended in disappointment as they faced an in-form Boyne side at Shamrock Lodge on Sunday, January 19th. Despite a promising start and periods of dominance throughout the game, Boyne edged the contest with a 23-15 victory. However, Kilkenny’s performance had plenty of positives to take forward into the rest of the season.
First Half
Kilkenny began the match with authority, dominating the scrums and lineouts in the opening 20 minutes. The front row, led by Brian Howe, Ben Devlin, and Josh Evans, put Boyne under significant pressure, earning multiple penalties and free kicks. The lineout was equally effective, with Wes Carter and Jake Caldbeck excelling in aerial duels.
Despite Kilkenny’s strong start, it was Boyne who struck first. In the 19th minute, the home side crossed the try line to take a 5-0 lead, though the conversion attempt went wide. Just four minutes later, Boyne extended their advantage to 8-0 with a well-taken penalty.
Kilkenny remained unfazed by the early setback and responded with patience and precision. After a period of sustained pressure, Jake Caldbeck powered over the try line to register Kilkenny’s first points of the game. Jack Campion added the conversion, narrowing the deficit to 8-7.
The visitors’ momentum continued as they forced Boyne into a series of penalties. Joey Manuel and Brian "Beano" McDonald formed a solid centre partnership, breaking the gain line and setting up opportunities, while Jay Leahy’s tireless defensive efforts kept Boyne’s attack at bay. A controversial moment arose when Boyne’s tighthead prop struck Kilkenny captain Garry Dunne with a high elbow. While the referee acted, he mistakenly penalised a different Boyne player, resulting in a yellow card for the home side.
Kilkenny capitalised on their numerical advantage. Jack Campion slotted a penalty to give his side a slender 10-8 lead going into halftime.
Second Half
Buoyed by their first-half performance, Kilkenny supporters were optimistic as the second half kicked off. The set-piece remained a key strength, and Kilkenny continued to play with purpose and energy. Their efforts paid off early in the second half when they executed a textbook lineout near Boyne’s 5-metre line. Wes Carter claimed possession, and the pack drove forward with a powerful maul. Hooker Ben Devlin emerged from the heap to touch down for Kilkenny’s second try, extending their lead to 15-8 after Campion’s conversion attempt went wide.
However, the match’s tide began to turn as Kilkenny’s discipline faltered. In the 58th minute, Jack Campion was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on, reducing Kilkenny to 14 men. Boyne seized the opportunity to claw back three points with a penalty, narrowing the score to 15-11.
The momentum shifted further in Boyne’s favour when they struck with two quick-fire tries in the space of seven minutes. The sudden turnaround stunned Kilkenny, as the hosts surged ahead 23-15.
With 10 minutes remaining, Kilkenny were awarded a penalty in a kickable position, but the attempt went wide. Despite Boyne receiving a second yellow card in the dying moments for another knock-on, the home side’s defense held firm, and they secured a hard-fought victory.
Post-Match Reflections
Kilkenny captain Garry Dunne commended his team’s effort and resilience despite the defeat. “Boyne is a tough place to travel to, especially after the extended Christmas break, but the lads showed great heart, determination, and skill throughout the game. We’ll dust ourselves down and get ready for a strong finish in the League and a promising Towns Cup run.”
Kilkenny’s strong set-piece performance and solid defensive efforts were key positives to take from the match. The front row’s dominance and the cohesion in the lineout highlighted the team’s potential to compete at a high level.
Looking Ahead
The loss sees Kilkenny drop to 5th place in the Leinster League 1B table, trailing Gorey by 5 points. However, with a game in hand against Wexford, Kilkenny has an opportunity to close the gap and strengthen their position.
Attention now shifts to the Provincial Towns Cup, where Kilkenny will face Cill Dara in the first round at Foulkstown on Sunday, January 26th, at 2:30 pm. The match presents an opportunity for Kilkenny to bounce back and build momentum for the rest of the season. The team will look to channel the positives from their performance against Boyne and iron out the discipline issues that proved costly.
